Officials with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) said its member unions may speed up labor-management negotiations so the "spring struggles," which usually peak in May, do not advance into June.

"We're weighing the possibility of holding spring season wage negotiations and collective bargaining earlier than usual, on condition that imprisoned workers are released and firms be allowed to settle wage disputes and other conflicts through industrial unions," said, a KCTU spokesman.

The KCTU is also demanding that the government pass a bill on introducing a five-day workweek during an extraordinary session of the National Assembly during February.

The KCTU called for the release of Dan Byung-ho, the group's leader, who is in prison for organizing illegal strikes. Otherwise, the labor group said, it will launch joint protests with international labor groups during the World Cup. 
민주노총은 불법파업을 이유로 수감중인 단병호 위원장의 석방을 요구하면서, 그렇지 않을 경우 월드컵 기간 동안 국제노동계와 공동 시위를 전개하겠다고 말했다.

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), will demand a 12-percent wage hike this year. The objective is set to meet 72 percent of standard living costs for a family with 3.6 members.
